What is Medicare Part D?

In 2006, Medicare began offering an optional prescription drug program called Medicare Part D. This program provides insurance coverage that can help lower your current prescription drug costs and keep you from having to pay higher costs in the future. These plans are only available through private insurance companies like Blue Cross.

Even if you do not currently spend much money on medications, having a Medicare Part D plan means that you will be covered if your situation changes. The medications you purchase through a Blue MedicareRx (PDP) prescription drug plan are provided at discounted rates.

Key facts to keep in mind:

  1. Enrollment in Medicare Part D is voluntary.

  2. Anyone on Medicare Part A or Part B is eligible for Part D coverage, regardless of health or income status.

  3. If you want Part D coverage, you must enroll in a plan offered by a private insurance company, like us. Part D plans are not provided directly by Medicare.

  4. You must enroll during specific time periods. If you don’t sign up when you first become eligible, you may have to pay a late penalty that adds to your monthly premiums as long as you’re in the program.

  5. If your income is limited, you may qualify for “Extra Help”, which means you’ll pay very low costs for your medications.
