Medicare Part D
Enrollment Periods

Medicare Part D enrollment is limited to three time periods. If you miss your initial enrollment period, you might have to pay a late enrollment penalty.

Initial Enrollment Period

This is the period in which you first become eligible for Medicare. Reasons you become eligible include:

  • You turn 65. Your chance to sign up includes the 3 months before your birthday and the 3 months after your birthday.
  • You have a disability or end-stage renal disease. Your chance to sign up includes the 3 months before your disability or renal disease occurs until 3 months after your 25th month of disability.

Annual Open Enrollment Period

This period begins on October 15 and ends on December 7. During this time, you may enroll in or change a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan. Coverage begins January 1 of the following year.

Special Enrollment Period

Special enrollment is available in certain situations, such as:

  • You are enrolling into a 5 STAR Medicare Prescription Drug Plan.
  • You permanently move into our plan’s service area, which is Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
  • You lose employer group prescription drug coverage.
  • You recently had a change in my Medicaid (newly got Medicaid, had a change in level of Medicaid assistance, or lost Medicaid).
  • You recently had a change in my Extra Help paying for Medicare prescription drug coverage (newly got Extra Help, had a change in the level of Extra Help, or lost Extra Help).
  • You have both Medicare and Medicaid (or my state helps pay for my Medicare premiums) or I get Extra Help paying for my Medicare prescription drug coverage, but I haven’t had a change. I am making this enrollment request between January 1 and September 30 and I understand I can only make this request once per quarter.
  • You live in, are moving into, or recently moved out of a nursing home or Long-term Care Facility.
  • You no longer qualify for Extra Help paying for your Medicare prescription drug coverage.
  • You belong to a Pharmacy Assistance Program (SPAP) provided by your state.
  • You are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan and want to make a change during the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (MA OEP) between January 1st and March 31st.
  • You are affected by a weather-related emergency or major disaster (as declared by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). One of the other statements here applied to me, but I was unable to make my enrollment because of the natural disaster.
  • You were recently released from incarceration.
  • You recently obtained lawful presence in the United States.
  • You are enrolled in a plan by Medicare (or my state) and I want to choose a different plan.
