Choose a Medicare Part D Plan with Confidence

Finding the Part D plan that’s right for you starts with gathering information on your needs and on the plans you are considering.

First, make a list of your medications and dosage

If you’re unsure about including a medication, ask your doctor. You may also want to talk to your doctor about any brand-name medications you take to see if a generic alternative is available. A generic alternative is a drug that treats the same diagnosis and is medically equivalent but often costs less at the pharmacy than its brand-name option. Switching to a generic alternative could save you money.

Next, review plan coverage options based on your individual needs

When you are reading about your options, it’s helpful to focus on plans rated highly by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and ask yourself questions to make sure the drug and network coverage meets your needs.

  1. Does the plan cover your medications? How is the plan's drug coverage? Look for plans that cover all your medications. Sometimes, the plan may not cover a brand-name drug, but it does cover a generic alternative that could save you money.
  2. Is the plan highly rated? Five stars is the highest rating a plan can earn. Star Ratings is how CMS rates prescription drug plans based on what’s important to members.
  3. What are the costs? Compare the plan’s premium, deductible, and medication costs. One plan may have a higher deductible but lower premiums and lower costs on your medications, while another plan may have a $0 deductible but higher premiums and higher costs on your medications. The one that's right for you will be based on your specific needs.
  4. Does the pharmacy network meet my needs? An in-network pharmacy usually saves you more money, so check the plan's list of pharmacies for the ones in your area. If you travel a lot, you should also check for nationwide pharmacy chains that you recognize. And if you prefer to have your medications delivered to you, see if the plan offers mail service.
